A longitudinal exploration of mental health resilience, cognitive impairment and loneliness

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Objective: There is a growing interest in how people living with dementia may achieve good outcomes and be resilient despite their health challenges. Understanding what might important for resilience this population largely untested theory. Methods: analysis draws subsample cognitive impairment (N = 579) from two waves the Cognitive Function Ageing Studies Wales study, nationally representative study community-dwelling aged 65+ Wales. We constructed measure mental (MHR) defined as no depression, anxiety high well-being. Drawing on framework, we tested univariate cumulative effects models factors that enable MHR, then examined whether MHR reducing loneliness over time. Results: Across both data 22% (n 121) met criteria MHR. model found odds were greater male gender, higher self-esteem, social resources subjective memory complaints. Controlling these significant predictors, significantly predicted lower total sub-scale scores at wave 2.
